Do you know? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2358, 1997 ed.: "They [homosexual people] must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided." Two of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching guide us in this teaching. Life & Dignity of the Human Person, reminds us that every person is made by God, in the image and likeness of God. This ensures each person, without exception and regardless of any other qualities or characteristics, has infinite dignity and is worthy of the respect due a child of God. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, calls us to give special attention and care to those on the margins of society, those who have been excluded or deprived of rights or resources that would allow them to live free of discrimination. Pope Leo XIV, speaking of the role of the church in the lives of those encountering various difficulties, had this to say: "I believe it is urgent to establish a pastoral ministry that is supportive, empathetic, discreet, and non-judgmental, welcoming to all, and that offers the most personalized paths possible, suited to the diverse life situations of those receiving it." Love Thy Neighbor, a group here at MMOC, aspires to these ideals. Look for our upcoming book study in early 2026 to help us learn how to be a church of encounter and accompaniment to those who may feel unwelcome, hurt, or misunderstood.
