How many of us feel our hearts burning as we view the devastations of war in Ukraine, Israel, Palestine, Sudan, and other areas of the world on the news? Do we feel helpless when we hear stories of migrants who are fleeing persecution drowning in the Rio Grande or the Mediterranean Sea? Do we weep when we hear of another individual with a history of mental illness executed in our own state? St. Paul reminds us today “all the parts of the body, though many, are one body.” (1 Cor 12:12) The U.S. Bishops wrote in Communities of Salt and Light (1994) that Catholic social teaching more than anything insists we are one family; it calls us to overcome barrier of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, economic status, and nationality” … and reminds us “We are part of a universal Church with ties of faith and humanity to sisters and brothers all over the world.” Pope Francis teaches in Let us Dream (2020) that “Solidarity is not the sharing of crumbs from the table, but to make space at the table for everyone.” How can we, as Catholics, live out the call to be a community of solidarity?
