Did you know that, according to the American Immigration Council, immigrants make up 5 percent of the labor force in Missouri and are important in a range of industries? 25 percent of immigrant workers are in life, physical, and social science occupations with approximately 44 thousand in healthcare, social assistance, accommodation, and food service jobs. Undocumented immigrants comprised 2 percent of Missouri’s workforce in 2016. Immigrant-led households paid $1.9 billion in federal taxes and $790.8 million in state and local taxes in 2018 and had $6.8 billion in after tax spending power. Undocumented immigrants paid an estimated $107.1 million in federal taxes and $62.3 million in state and local taxes in 2018. Immigrant entrepreneurs in our state generate hundreds of millions of dollars in business revenue. Far from being a drain on resources, immigrants contribute to both the financial wellbeing and cultural diversity in our communities.
Can we demonstrate greater compassion and embrace the guidance of Pope Francis as he asks us to practice a culture of encounter towards our immigrant brothers and sisters in order to build a better, more just, and fraternal world?
