The ultimate goal of the Christian life and of all spiritual practices is awareness of and abandonment to our communion with God, and the resulting transformation into an icon of the Divine Heart. Because God is infinite, the process of increasing awareness, abandonment, and transformation is also “infinite,” ongoing through every stage of life in God. As we sink into the depths of God, there will be times where we will be invited to take a rest from the spiritual journey, to reflect on where we've been, how far God has brought us, and to relearn how to navigate our world and life circumstance from our increasingly more Christlike worldview. These times of rest and acclamation is necessary to synthesize and integrate the graces we receive as we awaken to God's presence and action in our lives. However, we should be wary of the temptation to “homestead” in the spiritual life for too long, of exchanging ever-more realized communion for comfort. Periods of consolation are wonderful, but over the expanse of our journey with God, our only abiding comfort is knowing we can trust God wherever God leads. Perhaps your prayer practice has led you to a place and a depth that feels inviting, or perhaps God has already asked so much of you that you fear having nothing more to give. In either case, breathe. Rest. Savor the grace of this moment. And then, when the time is right, take the next step forward. Contact us at 314-578-0062 or [email protected]!
