When we speak of the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, we speak of the very nature of God. Vast amounts have been said and written about the particulars of the Three Persons of the Trinity, yet when you step back from it, trying to define the distinctions between the Three can feel a bit futile: because all three of the Trinitarian Persons are fully God, each must ultimately be acknowledged as a full participant in creation, redemption, and sanctification, in calling to existence, calling to wholeness, and calling to renewal, in being Lover, Beloved, and love itself. This then begs the question: What is the significance of the Three? One way this question has been answered is to suggest that the ultimate of the Trinity is not ultimately, finally about the Three, but about the relationship between them. This line of thought says that it is precisely the willingness to love, to be loved, and to be love for each other that is the core identity of the Trinity, and the life into which the Trinity invites us. To advance in love is to be taken up into this great Trinitarian relationship, and every time we make an offering of ourselves in our prayer practice, we are further establishing ourselves within that supreme relationship, allowing the Trinity to conform us to loving, being loved, and becoming Love, taking on the very life and power of God.
