Author and motivational speaker Regina Brett once wisely stated that “God isn't present in the past or future. The great 'I Am' is in the present moment.” Divine union can only be realized in the now, and likewise Dive gifts like grace, peace, healing, and love can only be given and received now. In that sense, it is ineffectual to focus our spiritual energy in the past or in the future. Yes, God will heal the wounds of the past – that healing happens now. Yes, God will provide for and sustain every future moment – but only once that moment is present, and only as that present moment arrives in its reality. Contemplative practice, then, serves the immensely valuable purpose of moving our awareness to the only moment in which God can act — this one! In our practices, we detach from regrets and nostalgia about the past as well as aspirations and anxieties about the future and embrace the true theological virtue of hope: the recognition that in every moment that has unfolded and is yet to unfold in time, God is there to bring love into that present moment and make it holy. Staying in the now gives us the gift of opportunity to encounter God where God is and as God is and gives God the gift of a full person to love and cherish into wholeness.
