The use of the sacred word in Centering Prayer practice is designed to facilitate a comfort with detachment – a disposition of not possessing or clinging – by supporting the letting go of thoughts, but the facility with detachment developed in our prayer is meant to extend far beyond the prayer itself. Ultimately, we are meant to cling to nothing but the Reality that is God. As we progress in the spiritual journey, we find that we are called to relax our grip on things that feel like the bedrock of our lives: key relationships, basic abilities, and fundamental understandings about “The Way Things Are.” (detachment does not mean we force a change or remove anything from our lives, but just the opposite – we set all things free to evolve and develop as they will in God’s hands). Often, one of the final and most difficult things to set free is our faith itself: the meaning, understanding, and relevance of the very concepts and practices by which we try to comprehend and relate to God. It takes tremendous courage and trust in the Love of God to release even the things we thought made up our spiritual core. All of our traditions and practices serve a purpose… but we all know deep down that any “box” trying to contain Divine Love will be inadequate, and we have to detach from them, as well, to be free for God alone.
